POLITICS: Great Moments in Oratory

It's happened to us all. You know what you want to say, but the words coming out of your mouth don't quite say what you mean. For instance, yesterday City Councilman Jim Tayoun took the floor to criticize the police department's physical-fitness test, which a federal judge has said discriminates against women. Tayoun condemned the test and then dropped this pearl on his colleagues: "The police commissioner must remember this fact: Men and women are different.

As fellow council members pondered that weighty observation, Tayoun tried to still the laughter that erupted from the gallery. He continued, "There are some things men do better (more laughter). There are some things women do better (still more laughter). We all know there are some things they do very well together (by this time the audience is rolling in the aisles)."

His cause was hopeless, but Tayoun made one more valiant try to salvage his speech: "And one of those things is working together as police officers."
